HELP!!!!! Since last summer I've developed psoriasis and it's f***ing aggravating! I've been in light therapy and use a plethora of creams, but nothing helps all that much. My skin isn't the part that bugs me the most--it's my scalp that's really getting to me. I've used tar shampoos, P&S solutions, medication, everything!!! It's getting so bad! I sleep w/a hat on to deter scratching, but during the day I'm constantly brushing out flakes... Sad! It's really gross and I'm afraid--as shallow as this may sound--it will affect my social life. Summer is coming up soon, my first summer with full-blown psoriais. Any advice from fellow sufferers to get through the stares and looks of repulsion?

Ther's no cure for psoriasis Sad! The disease isn't even fully understood yet... it's said to be caused by a malfunction of the immune system but still not a whole lot is known about that. They have some kind of (not so effective) medication for it, but you mentioned that it didn't work for you.

Natural methods of treatment are recommended- you mentioned the light therapy (sunlight apparently improves most psoriasis patient's skin quality), but you said that didn't work either...

It can be controlled somewhat by sticking to an appropriate diet- eat healthy, basically. A LOT of FRUIT AND VEGGIES... stay away from junk... exercise... a healthy lifestyle in general will help your skin too, not to mention the other benefits you'll reap.

Evening primrose oil is said to help. You can find it at any healthfood store I think.

Moisturize, Moisturize, MOISTURIZE!

ALSO though the disease is genetic, it's also been discovered that it can be triggered by various environmental influences... STRESS being a big one... so try to relax a bit... maybe take up meditation, or just try to lead a quieter life in general (like that's possible at 18, huh?)

My dad has psoriasis and has had it a long time. He goes to the doctor and goes under UV rays for treatment. That clears it up really well. The doc tried him on experimental drugs too and the worked really really well.

Two of my cousins have it and one has it really bad in her head but she doesn't do anything about it. I guess it doesn't show up that much.

NOA: psoriasis is an epidermal condition where skin cells reproduce at an unusually high rate. What would take a normal person twenty days or so to produce takes a person with psoriasis 4-5 days. The result is patches of red, dry and VERY itchy skin in various parts of the body. When mine first started it was on my neck and then crept down my shoulders until my whole chest/neck area was covered.
Then that went away and now I have it worst on my back and inner-upper thigh areas. It's usually symmetrical as well, for some reason. It's genetic--NOT CONTAGiOUS!!! So many people ask that, and it gets annoying...and hurts too! Sad!
I don't have it as bad as some, but it could very well get worse. That's the most frustrating part--will it go away? Will it get worse?

It's genetic----my grandfather has it and two of my uncles too, all on the same side.......My dad has it the worst tho. So it seeme likely that I'll eventually get it.....If not I have the genes for it and maybe my kids will have to suffer it. I know its very uncomfortable for my dad, he's always very itchy. Studies show that worry and stress make it worse than it is too.

I have psoriasis... another symptom is simple lack of pigmentation... This doesn't even itch. That's how i first found out about it. I went to the dermatologist about these white patches on my face (which were barely noticeable, but I was super sensitive to it because at 13 you are always on about your appearance...) and she checked my scalp, knees, elbows and nails... and I apparently suffered from it on all those places.. so she put me on this tar creme. You put it in your hair at night (if your scalp is infected) and wash it out in the morning. It worked so well, but i have thick long hair... so it got hard, it also smells like shyte.... so i stopped it, and started a new medication called Daivonex. This takes FOREVER to start working... like 6-8 weeks, but it works... with constant use. I don't use it anymore, either.... now i just use a simple Tar shampoo (SebiTar) once a week... and ocasionally use this stuff called Lanotar which works, but i don't like to use all the time... I'll be stuck with it for the rest of my life - I'm a worry wart, and stress about too much, not mention the fact i suffer from panic attacks and anxiety, which worsen it... Although my scalp hasn't cleared up yet and is itchy pretty much 24/7, I just put up with it... If you wash your hair every 2nd day, with a normal shampoo, it washes all the dead skin out too, and then you don't have to worry about killing your hair with the chemicals from the tar shampoo... I always make sure I wash my hair before I go out with friends and stuff so it gets rid the signs... unfortunately my psoriasis is spreading to a patch on my thigh and my arm....but it clears up quickly...
Sunlight does help - Vitamin D is found in the sun and a deficiency in this vitamin is another rumoured cause...
hmm yeah..
I'm lucky to not have serious physical signs... It's mainly the itchyness that bugs me.

Dad uses a Tar shampoo too and we can always tell when dad has washed his hair cuz you can smell it everywhere.
My father works away from home and is away for long periods of time. While he is home he goes for treatments and it clears up and then he goes away and is worried about us home here and the stress and worry makes all the psoriasis come back, even worse.

i have psoriais and have had the whole of my life ( nearly 17 in 4 months). Its kinda bad, depending how you look at it. it covers all of both my knees and some of my legs too, i have it on both ankles, elbows, under my armpit (great isnt it?!) on my belly and on my head. It is very annoying and i wont wear any thing but trousers out of the house and the thought that it wont go away is a daunting one! When I woke up a few days ago with red itchy patches on my face and straight away started to worry it was going to appear on my face, that being the last place you wasn't people looking at and thinking ..yuck. However went to the doctors and found out its eczema, don't know which I would have preferred it be! Anyway, if there's any suffers out there, realise that your not alone and you have to stay confident. I'm getting t the point where I don't want to leave my bedroom in case someone sees me (I also have another skin condition that im not going to attempt to spell and acne so very self conscious) so I am needing to take my own advice here. If any one wants to email me then reply and I'll give you my address. Thanks becky xx
